Fourth Sunday - Advent Wreath

Light the first two purple candles, the pink candle, and the last purple candle.

Say

“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:4-5)

Read

The fourth candle symbolizes LOVE. It reminds us of how Jesus’s birth demonstrated God’s great love for us.

Read Scripture

1 John 4:9-10, 19

“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only son into the world, that we might live through him…In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins…We love because he loved us first.”

Reflect

  • God came near to his fickle people when Jesus was born; his love became flesh and bones. Think about or discuss how Jesus’s birth demonstrates his great love for us.
  • The birth of our Savior was a major milestone in God’s ultimate rescue plan. Think for a moment about what would ultimately take place a few decades later, how Jesus would suffer and die for us. How does this deepen your understanding of his love for you?
  • How could a greater awareness of God’s love for you help you love others more?

Pray

Father, Son, and Spirit, you are love. You have poured out love for us abundantly, and we don’t deserve it. We praise you for your perfect love. Thank you for going to such extreme lengths to draw near to humanity. Give us a greater understanding of your love and help us to live like people who are lavishly loved and pour out that love to others. May others see your love through us. Amen.
