Solus Christus: The Benefits of Christ

Back to all sermons Solas

Date: September 3, 2017

Speaker: Mike Juday

Series: Solas

Scripture: Philippians 3:1–3:11

We do better to adore the mysteries of deity than to investigate them… But as for one who is ignorant of the fundamentals -- namely the power of sin, the law, and grace -- I do not see how I can call him a Christian. For from these things Christ is known, since to know Christ means to know his benefits… For unless you know why Christ put on flesh and was nailed to the cross, what good will it do you to know merely the history about him?… Christ was given us as a remedy and, to use the language of Scripture, a saving remedy. - Philip Melanchthon

The Benefits of Christ

  • Rest in work
  • Riches beyond compare

The glory of the Christian life is not found in the promise of victories or a life of ease or a perpetual state of mountaintop ecstasy. The gift of faith is Christ himself. It is Jesus, who is within, before, and behind, walking through life as our constant companion and strength. The wise believer recognizes that the treasure is Christ, and he or she has one great desire – to become Christ possessed. - Terry Wardle, The Transforming Path

  • Rigtheousness of Christ

“Your sins are too great for pardon; you have no faith; you do not repent enough; you will never be able to continue to the end; you have not the joy of His children; you have such a wavering hold of Jesus.” All these are thoughts about self, and we shall never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: He tells us that we are nothing, but that “Christ is all in all.” - Charles Spurgeon
