question to statement ratio

Jim Collins recently gave 10 tips for young leaders. The most convicting advice for me was his encouragement for leaders to increase their question to statement ratio. Effective leaders are learners before they’re opinion givers. What about you? Do you ask more questions or make more statements?

Watch Your Language!

My wife and I had the opportunity to go on a brunch date earlier this week. Our server, Sunny, was very nice. Nice service goes a long way in our books! You should’ve seen her when I told her we were about to pray for our meal and we wondered if there were any ways [...]

two words

I’ve been enjoying the warm weather in Orlando, FL while attending the Exponential Church Planting Conference. The experience was definitely confirming and encouraging. I was pleased to see that it was more about heart, mission, and vision than gimmicks on how to start a church. Two of the main themes of the conference were transformation [...]

the missional vs. attractional church model myth

There’s been a debate among church leaders in the United States as to whether the primary function of the church is to gather (attract) or scatter (mission). The missional camp focuses on empowering people to live out God’s mission in their context. The attractional camp focuses on hosting events that draw people to the church [...]

Midweek Musing…

A city is exalted by the blessing provided by the upright. ~ Proverbs 11:11a What a statement. I can’t get the thought of it out of my head. What an astounding truth for the church to cling to. What I found so compelling in the article was the discussion of how many Christians associate their faith by the manner in which they “experience” God. It doesn’t matter [...]

compelling three days in Columbus

Megan and I returned to Little Rock after a short trip to our future residence. We drove to Columbus in search of a home and to drop off our car so I don’t have to tow it next month. It looks like our house search proved successful as we found a few homes that were [...]

Pain and the Church

…I remember something C.S. Lewis said many years ago, “In a sense Christianity creates, rather than solves, the problem of pain…”

what is the Bible?

One of the best summations of both the reason to read and how to apply the Bible is found in Tom Wright’s Simply Christian: “. . . what Christians believe about Jesus generates a narrative within which one is called to live; that living within that story generates a call to a particular vocation within [...]

getting naked

I love inappropriate headlines . . . Leadership consultant Patrick Lencioni has a relatively new book out titled Getting Naked where he outlines the need for people and organizations to demonstrate vulnerability. The basic premise of the book is so right, and yet we often do exactly the opposite. Rather than being open and honest [...]
